we are following breaking news right now at 11:00. a lockdown in texas. a high school student shoots another teenager in a bathroom before turning the gun on herself. that shooter died. the other student expected to pull through. that investigation unfolding a west texas town. this was called out as an active shooter situation. we know an officer was also shot after another officer's gun accidentally fired. police say the students gun was found near that suspected shooter. we don't know the names or ages of those girls. that's the wrong video behind us. decision day for a valley mom convicted of doing the unthinkable. a judge has sentenced brenda maguey to less than five years in prison and nine months supervised probation.

they did survive but again, this valley mother sentenced after stabbing her children. it is feeling pretty well -- just a little moisture in the air. >> the moisture still lingering behind the remnants of hurricane tropical storm newton. now well off to our east but this morning we are feeling the moisture. that moisture that was lingering across our state also contributed to foggy conditions in the high country. this picture sent in to shar at abc15.com, that fog clearing up now but the moisture still in place and feeling it here in the valley too. some clouds out there as well. those clouds gradually thinning out. as we go to this afternoon, mostly sunny conditions. the dew point still elevated, upper 60s and we will likely keep the dew points in the mid- to-upper 60s into this afternoon. so it's going to feel muggy outside. 84 now. heat index 87. the dew points hovering in the mid-to-upper 60s into this afternoon.

humid but that also means temperatures won't get as hot today. below average because of that extra moisture that's lingering. 95 degrees will be our high temperature today. there is still a slight chance of a stray shower or storm. i'll show you the hour by hour breakdown in a few minutes. newton treated us to an amazing sunset. we just received a ton of pictures from all across arizona just really showing us some amazing cloud formations and colors when weather happens in your area, keep those photos and videos coming. send them to us at share@abc15.com. a woman is shot and killed on the 51 last night. shut down the northbound lanes and caused a major backup. abc15's allison rodriguez has more from the scene. >> reporter: a very scary situation. the northbound lanes are open

overnight. one woman is dead and now the suspects are on the run. according to police the victim called 911 before 7:30 last night. she told the dispatchers that three men were chasing her. the dispatchers say she got onto the highway and that truck was still following her according to this woman. all of a sudden shots fired and the call gets disconnected. when police get here, they find her vehicle crashed into the center wall and she has gunshot wounds. she was pronounced dead at hospital. the whole incident causing major backups on the 51. we spoke with a witness who says he saw the whole thing unfold. >> her car veered over to the left. and hit the wall. and i saw her not -- i couldn't see her anymore. >> reporter: police are not identifying this victim. we are hoping to learn that at some point today.

in trying to track down this truck, white utility truck, it has a ladder rack in the back plus a toolbox. in phoenix, allison rodriguez, abc15. that created terrible backups, drivers getting stuck for hours as the investigation started. the backup was more than a mile long. you can see how the drivers had to get off the 51. actually going the wrong way down an on-ramp at mcdowell. air-15 capturing the bird's eye view of this, cars every which way. pointing in all directions. drivers trying to figure out how to maneuver out of this after sitting at a standstill for ours. a man fortunate to be able to escape. flames erupted overnight near 56th and thomas. these pictures coming to us from stephen marshall. phoenix fire telling us the fire started on the back patio. it spread to the attic. we talked with one of those neighbors. >> you could see firefighters were battling. the front door, they were like

and then they had the ladder up above it. they were shooting foam down. >> you can see really a lot of extensive damage to that roof right there. the family is going to stay with relatives. for the time being. a tucson man will spend the next 30 years behind bars. eric james alvarez was sentenced. he pleaded guilty after admitting to producing child pornography videos with a young girl. the conviction is the result of a 2014 investigation and a national campaign aimed at stopping the exploitation of children. >> i'm sorry. i'm sorry. i'm sorry. about what's going on. it's messed up. now they are chasing me. before i could say who or what or where you're at, let me come get you, all he told me was call my mom. christina del rio senti explaining the call she got from her brother, just after tuesday's bank robbery in avondale.

police chase and recognize the suv put it together. she wants to be clear about what happened next. you see the bundle out the window there? that was a long sleeved shirt, not a bag of stolen cash. >> i didn't get a chance to scream at him or tell him, you know, where he's going -- like it was the last goodbye. >> as for the phone call she held the gate open, you can see her highlighted there. she was calling her sister-in- la because she knew something was wrong. a mother triers -- a mother tries to get help for her son but it was too late. breaking news yesterday morning, phoenix police officers shot and killed dylan poppa after he lunged at them with a sword strapped to his hand. only on abc15, dylan's mom says he had a history of mental illness and days before officer shot him, he tried to kill her. she says police are not to blame for her son's death.

to survive. he has been with the department for six years. you may remember last month that there was an attack at the same jail. you can see two inmates punching the officer as he tries to defend himself. another officer jumped in to help. 's back a former mesa police officer gearing up for trial. phillip rails for it is accused of shooting and killing an unarmed man at a hotel in january. he is due back in court on october 21. after a few delays, shelley zeichner could learn her fate, the career con artist is expected to be sentenced today. one of her schemes involved faking cancer to get a taxpayer- funded abortion. a little greener, tempe expected to join phoenix with the grid bike share program. the city council is voting on this tonight. if it is past, 300 bikes would be stationed across the city by early next year. many of them along the asu campus. so you're going to be able to

so a change from yesterday's wet weather across the state. in fact it is dried up across the state. we had showers early this morning in southeast arizona but those clearing out. this all happening as the remnants of what once was hurricane newton continue to push well off to our east. it has taken the bulk of the moisture with it but enough lingering moisture to feel it in error, a little bit uncomfortable. enough to keep the storm chance dew points have overall dropped by several degrees in our valley cities and across the state but you can see the dew points are still in the mid-to- upper 60s in central arizona. still it -- still elevated to the southeast as well. so it's going to stay humid today and that moisture will linger but by tomorrow we'll get more of that drier air and saturday also seeing dry air so we're going to drop our storm chances out of the forecast completely friday to saturday. before the monsoon moisture works its way back in and the

for today, watch for a stray shower and thunderstorms in southeast arizona. we could see an isolated threat along the rim and a 10% chance in the valley but most of us really looking to stay dry. we'll be watching this this afternoon into the early evening, overall we'll start to to see the mostly clear skies as we go to this afternoon. very stray chance of a thunderstorm. overnight, clearing skies, tomorrow mostly sunny skies. dry as we lose the moisture. it will feel more comfortable a little hotter. mostly clear skies into saturday as well. before the storm chances return. today plan on isolated threat, 10% chance and again between three and 6:00 that we'll see that potential to possibly see a stray shower and thunderstorm. otherwise going to stay dry through today. as we look at tomorrow, storm chances clearing out of our forecast friday, saturday. high country pretty low, 10% chance of a stray shower.

moisture return, storm chances will start go -- start to go back up. monday looking better for storms. watching that closely and drier air moves back in by the middle of next week. the upside to all of this moisture lingering is that our temperatures won't get too hot today. they are going to stay below the average this time of year which is 102. notice we're going highs in the low to mid-90s. some of the hotter spots up to 96 in peoria, levine and ahwatukee. 94 in mesa, scottsdale 95 under the mostly clear skies this afternoon. phoenix also heading towards 95 this afternoon. the only spots in the triple digits, bullhead city, lake havasu and yuma. low one hundreds today. a little bit more about what to expect tonight and as we head toward the weekend in your seven-day forecast. >> thanks, iris. let's talk about tim tebow. he is making a huge transition. the former quarterback will soon be a met.

george washington bridge lane closure. three years ago two top aides to chris christie were accused of orchestrating a massive traffic jam to punish a mayor for not endorsing christie. kristi denies knowing anything about this. tropical storm newton sending arizona showers. we didn't see too much here in the valley but tucson saw some wet roads. people spent the morning filling sandbags to get ready for the hemi flooding. in nogales and yuma, they saw pooling and flooding in certain areas. from some of this video here, in mexico they got pounded by storms, horrible rains coming down as homeowners took shelter at home and tourists huddled in hotels. the storm broke windows, downed trees and knocked out power. it wasn't as strong as hurricane norbert, this is the two-year anniversary of that hurricane making landfall. for the first time we're getting a look at surveillance

escaping police custody. we've been following this story out of las vegas. take a look at this, cameras rolling in an interview room when alonzo perez escaped right under their noses. police say he twists the handcuffs until the hinge snaps , he then puts a chair against the wall, climbs up and knocks out a few ceiling tiles, that allows him to climb into the rafters and out of the building. more than a half hour passed until anyone noticed he was gone. perez was on the run for four days until police tracked him down. now to hawaii where a woman is struggling to survive a close encounter with a shark. police say the 51-year-old was attacked off the shores of oahu. lifeguards pulling her on board a boat with bites to her arms and shoulders. investigators don't know what type of shark that was. something scary to find close to a school. a whopping 11-foot, 450-pound alligator. florida police captured it yesterday morning and had a

apparently there have been calls about this gator before but this time they were finally able to track it down. you can call it pennies from heaven. i suppose. thousands of the coins spilling all over a highway in delaware. the tractor-trailer was headed to the u.s. mint in philadelphia when it slammed into a cement barrier and turned over. the truck caught fire. thankfully that driver was not seriously hurt. it took an act of congress but now a female pilot is getting the recognition she deserves. elaine harman was a wasp, part of a group of women who flew military aircraft on noncombat missions during world war ii. it was true -- it was created to free up men for combat. harman was denied the chance to have her ashes placed in urns at arlington national ceremony -- cemetery. the first female fighter pilot in u.s. history to fly in combat, helped to overturn that band. >> these were feisty, brave

and they served even though they were intended to be military, intended to be active duty, because of quite frankly straight up sexism, right -- >> roughly 1000 women served as wasps from 1942-44. fewer than 100 are still alive. controversy on campus. segregated housing, requested by black students. there's already a waiting list. the dorms can hold 24 people living at california state university los angeles. the school refers to it as a themed community. the goal is to give black students a place to congregate and connect. it's the great borough roundup, land management officials rounding up wild burrows from desert areas near yuma to control overpopulation. government officials calling on the roundup after a spike in wrecks involving the animals. the video right now, burrows are also being blamed for ruining crops after wandering into fields.

trained and most will be adopted out. nasa will launch a new space probe with a little help of scientists from the university of arizona. the mission is the first of its kind. the rocket is set to launch just after 4:00 today. arizona time. it will carry a probe to an asteroid which is only the size of a small skyscraper. >> only 1600 feet, an island in the sky that to with this robotic spacecraft, sample it and return the sample to earth as a scientific legacy for generations. kind of like the dead sea scrolls. only in this case for the science of our solar system. the lead scientist is from the university of arizona. if all goes as planned, the probe will return to earth and land in the utah desert sometime in 2023. researchers hope the samples

this just into our newsroom, brand-new information about the deadly shooting on state route 51 that caused the massive backup. the victim has just been identified as 49-year-old

she was being followed from the area of seventh avenue and broadway. there may be a chance there was an incident involving three men before that shooting happened on the 51. now there's a manhunt for those guys. they were driving a white utility truck with a ladder rack and a toolbox in the back. please call police if you have information. watching wall street for you right now, the dow down 43 points at 18,482. mazda just announcing impacting nearly 860,000 cars and suvs in north america. the problem, the rear hatch could fall and hurt you. because of a coating might not effectively stop the lift support from corroding overtime. mazda three compact cars, mazda five things, cx five and cx x suvs. dealers will contact owners this month or next month to replace both lift supports.
